For this set of sculptures, I made some small hexagons out of wood and embedded a strip of LEDs in the back, cut a frame for them and put them into my hives. I did this two years in a row, once in a Kenyan top bar and then again in a Warre hive. After the bees had built their comb around the LEDs and into the frame, I made a plexiglass case using a Glowforge, wired up an Arduino with a sound sensor and plugged it in.
The LEDs are programmed to imply a quietly wandering bee in muted tones except when a loud noise plays. Then they flash angrily.
